The social dimension of development also demands assurance of the availability of the instruments required to generate new knowledge that can effectively respond to the growing demand of improved health and social conditions of citizens.
Furthermore, it is knowledge that allows us to move forward towards a better understanding and adaptation to the needs derived from an ever changing environment. Knowledge to know how to incorporate young people in the new social model; knowledge to know how to fully integrate our new neighbours from poorer economic and political environments; knowledge to guarantee life fulfilment of the elderly and maintain their main goal in society while performing other functions.
Yet, we finally want to point out, that the development has strictly political trends and therefore further understanding of it is absolutely necessary. Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize of Economics in 1998, speaking about development indicators said that the main indicator of development is Freedom, that the real progress of a state, in every sense of the term, is fundamentally measured by the degree of freedom of its citizens. Our society should also know how to move forward towards a fully consolidated society from the political and democratic point of view. This is also an essential challenge and demands important intellectual reflection so that fundamental democratic values such as freedom and equality, always maintain top priority.
