Knowledge as a driving force of Environmental Development

Economic development and a social model compatible with the Environment is now a moral demand for our Society. The present urban life style and, particularly, our productive structures, the occupation of land, transportation, consumption and leisure activities, and our own life standards, make us especially responsible for many of the environmental problems that our country will face in the coming years.

Thus, the environmental problems that our society has to face require immediate and deliberate actions of research allowing us to move forward towards the development of suitable and specific solutions for the conservation and preservation of our ecosystem. Contributing to generate the knowledge and development required to respond to and solve this complex problem will be one of the most important challenges in the next years.

In this sense, the problems associated with the development of new efficient and low environmental impact energy sources that can advantageously compete with the traditional ones, become particularly important. Furthermore, the development and application of technologies allowing optimisation of the use of energy, minimising losses (in the generation, transportation and consumption processes) will undoubtedly reduce levels of aggression against the Environment.
